Form and Function
Onjh is an anagram for John, who is the mixed media artist John McArdle from Burlington County, New Jersey. In 1970 when he was an impressionable teenager, John attended the first Earth Day event. It had a profound impact on him, as he realized the fragile ecology of the planet, and the tremendous waste of resources that ended in a landfill. Since then he has been a champion of the environment.
John always dabbled in the arts — painting and writing music and poetry. After retiring he went back to his creative roots. Combining his passion about recycling and his love of rummaging at thrift stores, yard sales, and dumpster diving, he began taking interesting pieces and refurbishing them into useful household items like lamps, clocks, and multimedia art. Working with many types of product, but particularly old cameras, radios, vintage roller skates, hand tools, natural woods, books, and many other unusual items, he has created beautiful, function lamps that embody his business name: Form and Function.
Using all new electrical wiring and parts, each piece crafted is a safe lighting piece, whether as a reading lamp, accent light or decorative floor lamp. Each piece carries a piece of history with it, as the various combined items provide a unique story of their own. Whether a traveling salesman's typewriter, a carefully-cured floor oak lamp, an antique bug sprayer, an English tea pot, a volt meter, or old milk can, John creates work that truly enhances the space where it is placed.
